MATTHEWS W.H. 1793-1867
A settler of 1820 who was born at London on the 3rd September 1793, and fell asleep in Jesus at Salem on the 22nd January 1867. This tablet has been erected by all classes of the inhabitants of Salem and its neighbourhood as a small token of respect for the memory of one who was exemplary in all the relations of life, domestic, social and religious and who was universally beloved and revered. He was at once the Magistrate, Doctor, adviser, peacemaker and universal referee, of all the country round.
