Cemetery / Memorials Information:
Begun in 1839, from the moment you leave the N2 until you reach Shawbury Mission you can expect endless potholes in the tar road. We reached the cemetery taking the track leading from the bridge just before you reach Shawbury but it is probably best to go down the fence line once you pass the ruin with the five brick pillars. School was in session and everything seemed to be behind locked gates and fences so we got on with looking for graves of interest. We photographed all the graves within a low walled square enclosure at 31° 14' 5.57" S, 28° 57' 8.44" E, not far from a bend in the stream bed.
The date of death for Jane Maria Hulley is the 29th of March 1849 aged 33 according to the ‘British 1820 Settlers to South Africa' web site that has interesting reading on Richard Hulley’s being an interpreter for a missionary at Dingaan’s Great Place.
Out of interest both Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Nontsikelelo Biko were pupils at the Shawbury secondary School.
The Rev. J Whiteside tells in his History of the Methodist Church in South Africa an interesting tale of a lion making a surprise visit to the Mission in the Rev. Garner’s time.
