Cemetery / Memorials information:- Chumie was established in 1820 by Reverend John Brownlee, as a station of for the Glasgow Missionary Society. The village which grew up about it was subsequently named Emgwali, takes its name from the Gwali River, a tributary of the Tyumie River. Also known as Tyumie Post and Chumie Mission. In 1827 two missionaries and two 'mechanics' (to teach manual work) were sent out to the station. The missionaries were James McLACHLAN & William CHALMERS while the mechanics were James WEIR and Alexander McDIARMID. Three of the men brought their wives, while James WEIR was accompanied by his mother Janet.
