Monument : Slag van Doornkraal deur Generaal C.R. de Wet op 6 November 1900
Doornkraal was a farm 10 km south of Bothaville in the Northern Orange Free State.
The British forces were on the trail of Boer General de Wet who late in October 1900 was heading south from Potchefstroom.
Three British columns were in pursuit with the one under the command of Colonel Le Galais being the closest.
In the early hours of 6 November 1900 the British advance scouts captured the sleeping Boer pickets at Doornkraal and advanced on the Boer camp.
Rifle fire alerted the Boers, some of whom fled, with others staying to fight.
After four hours of resistance the remaining Boers surrendered.
However de Wet and President Steyn who was in camp with de Wet both escaped.
The British lost three Officers, including Colonel Le Galais, and eight men killed, with 33 officers and men wounded.
The Boer losses were considerable and included supplies and six field guns.
