What we do today echoes in eternity
A recent enquiry from the family of the late Dr Zuurdeeg (1856-1908) of Frankfort brought a very interesting story to our attention. Dr Zuurdeeg was one of the first doctors in Frankfort and he saw the need for a Hospital for the town. When he died, he left a 1000-pound in his will for the building of a hospital. Numerous years expired before the hospital was actually built. In 28 April 1944 Ms Zuurdeeg officially opened the hospital. Ms Hester Muller was the first patient in the hospital and she is still living in Tweeling.
Dr Zuurdeeg was married in 1887 to Koosje van der Bosch from Harrismith. The couple did not have any children. At their gravesite in Frankfort a smaller tombstone was erected for their pets that were buried with them. Two yellowed photographs still hang in Frankfort hospital of Dr Zuurdeeg and Ms Zuurdeeg.
