Gauteng, JOHANNESBURG, Urban area / Gauteng, JOHANNESBURG, Soweto / Gauteng, JOHANNESBURG, Soweto, Avalon cemetery / (46 of 68 images)
Cemetery information provided by photographer Derek Walker:- The cemetery was opened in 1972, and is the 2nd largest and busiest in Johannesburg at 172 Hectares, and it holds approximately 300 000 graves, During the 1976 riots the building holding its records was burned and the records for the period between 1972 and 1976 were lost. I have to admit that it was one of the more impressive cemeteries I have visited, and probably the most frustrating too because of its size and the huge amount of graves in it. (Derek Walker)
