JOLIVET Charles Constant 1826-1903

This is the grave of Rt Rev Bishop Charles-Constant Jolivet, O.M.I. (Oblates of Mary Immaculate). The tombstone gives the Latin version of his name as is traditional in the Catholic Church for very senior clerics as Carolus Jolivet. He was born in France on 9 January 1826 and was appointed vicar apostolic of Natal on 15 September 1874. He died 15 September 1903. He was the bishop who initiated the building of the Cathedral and is buried under the floor, as are all the bishops of that diocese who died in South Africa. Information by Jane O'Connor.
