1. Overview
Building operations at the dam wall provided work for many poor whites at 35c a day. Most lived in tents and shacks in two camps. One was here. A wood and iron hut served as school, hospital, hall and church. The cemetery with many infants' graves and slate or sheet metal tombstones testifies of appalling conditions.
