Cemetery information:- Greenmarket Square, Cnr. Longmarket & Burg Streets, Cape Town. Rev. Barnabas Shaw, pioneer Wesleyan Methodist missionary to South Africa, who after his arrival in Cape Town on 14 April 1816, established South Africa's first Wesleyan Methodist mission station at Leliefontein in Namaqualand. BARNABAS SHAW (1788 - 1857) and his wife, JANE [nee BUTLER](1793 - 1861) with portrait (1820) of Rev. Barnabas Shaw above, situated inside the Metropolitan Methodist Church (Today called the Central Methodist Mission), Cape Town. *Photo Credit: Central Methodist Mission, Cape Town.(2016). *Inscription transcribed below: SACRED/ to the memory/ of the/ REV. BARNABAS SHAW./ WESLEYAN MISSIONARY/ who was born at/ Elloughton, Yorkshire, England/ on the 12th April 1788/ and/ sweetly fell asleep in JESUS/ at his residence in/ Rondebosch/ on the 20th June 1857/ in the 70th year of his age/ and the 47th of his ministry/ which was chiefly exercised in/ South Africa/ He rests from his labours.// ALSO OF/ JANE/ Relict of the above/ who was born at / Bridlington Quay/ 17th Nov 1793/ and died at Rondebosch/ 21st March 1861./ She sleeps in Jesus. *Barnabas and Jane were buried in the SOMERSET ROAD CEMETERY, Cape Town. After the closure of this cemetery, the gravestone was removed and placed inside the Metropolitan Methodist Church.
