Western Cape, CAPE TOWN, Observatory, Old cemetery next to Groote Schuur Hospital

Cemetery information:- The cemetery is situated across the street from Groote Schuur hospital, bordered by Main-, Falmouth-, Penzance- and Anzio streets. It is not a municipal cemetery - Cape Town City says it is a private cemetery. The cemetery seem to be nameless, although it is named as 'Mowbray cemetery' in old records and as 'Peter's Cemetery' on old maps. Additional info is: St. Peter’s Cemetery (1864 – 1981) originally covered 2.2 hectares. In 1994, St. Peter’s Church announced its intention to sell the land to raise money for the purchase of housing for the local homeless. Approximately 3% of the property was reserved and placed in trust. Approximately 10,000 remains were exhumed, cremated, and placed in a central ossuary, along with approximately 2,700 monuments. The names of all of the interred were inscribed on a central cube, and approximately 300 monuments were preserved for placement the Garden. The new Garden of Remembrance was consecrated on 16 December 1998. Sadly, it is one of the most neglected cemeteries that we have ever visited. An attempt was made to photograph all the graves (in 2010), but in some instances there were so much rubble that we do not know if we achieved this. We were also forwarned not to go in there without adequate security! We did meet the local Bergies (vagrants) residing in the cemetery.
